Welcome to the University of Oregon Summer Commencement. With each year's commencement comes a great sense of accomplishment as well as thoughts of the future. This year is no exception, holding as it does the joy and satisfaction of achievement and the promise of challenges and opportunities that will stretch courage and creativity in new and exciting directions.
The University of Oregon began 130 years ago with a promise from one generation of Oregonians to future generations. This promise was based on the belief that education could make a difference in the lives of men and women, and it was this difference that would, in turn, improve the quality of the state, the nation, and the world. This year we renew our commitment to be a part of making a difference. Our pledge is kept in part by the traditional commencement ceremony we attend today, and it will be kept in full by the accomplishments that you as graduates build and celebrate in the future. On behalf of the university community, I offer our best wishes as you continue to fulfill that original promise in the years to come.
