Presentation to State Board of Higher Education

On October 5, 2007, President Dave Frohnmayer gave a presentation to the State Board of Higher Education as part of the Board's long-range strategic planning process. "Spin a wheel and pick a state, large or small, rich or poor, and look at how well they fund their flagship and land grant institutions compared to other institutions," said Frohnmayer. "But not in Oregon." Frohnmayer made the case that the state must fund the UO's mission as Oregon's flagship Association of American Universities institution, and create a governance structure that lets the University of Oregon succeed.

Frohnmayer noted that in terms of state funding per student, the University receives just one-third of the average of its peer institutions. In fiscal year 2006, the UO received $3,232 per student from the state, while the average of its peer institutions in other states was $10,036 per student. Of the 591 four-year public institutions in the U.S., 558 received more state support per student than the UO.
