In that spirit, I am pleased to share Vice President for Equity and Inclusion, Yvette Alex-Assensoh’s recent opinion essay titled, “Are Black Men America’s Proverbial Canaries in the Coal Mine?” Her essay offers a perspective on the two recent grand jury verdicts and their implications for American democracy.

12/10/2014 • I am very pleased to report that the University of Oregon and the Graduate Teaching Fellows Federation have reached a tentative contract agreement. Once ratified, the new contract will provide pay increases and a graduate assistance fund and absences provision that address concerns about financial losses from medical and parental needs. This agreement means the strike has ended and we can return to our end-of-term activities.

I think it is fair to say the GTFF strike is hard on everyone, and that no one wanted things to get to this point. Frances and I, and our team, certainly hoped to reach agreement, and we have worked day and night to do so.

I want to first let you know that Provost Bronet is not able to attend today’s senate meeting because she is at the University of Michigan with Vice Presidents Yvette Alex-Assensoh and Robin Homes for a national meeting on campus climate.
10/22/2014 • Under our new governance by the Board of Trustees, the University of Oregon needs to review and update its policies. This is a big undertaking. But it is important work, as these policies are critical to our operations and fulfilling our mission. This review will also afford us the opportunity to organize and streamline the policies so that the University can operate effectively and transparently.
