Policy review and revision process update

The University of Oregon has embarked on a process of reviewing and updating its policies, as I announced to campus in October. The UO inherited hundreds of policies from the state when it transitioned from the state university system. This review is a big undertaking, and it is important work. Part of the review seeks to organize and streamline our policies so that the university can operate effectively and responsibility. The first part of this review is to identify those policies that are clearly inapplicable, duplicative, or outdated. Currently, the executive leadership team has identified 67 such obsolete policies or directives. This list has been reviewed by staff most familiar with the policies and our general counsel. I am now sending it to the Board of Trustees to review and consider for repeal.  All of these policies proposed for repeal are posted on the UO’s Policy Library in a document that includes hyperlinks to the current language for each. This effort is designed to streamline, update, and organize UO’s current policies to ensure they are applicable, clear, and consistent. This is just a first step. There remain  hundreds of policies we inherited from the state system that need to be carefully reviewed and vetted for updates, revisions, or possible repeal. We will continue to share information about this process on the Policy Library website. I will keep you posted as this effort progresses.
