Commencement Advisory Work Group Meeting Summaries

Welcome and Introductions. The provost welcomed and thanked the work group for their service to develop recommendations for a future five-year plan outlining how to conduct commencement, in a way that meets stakeholder goals.

Advisory Work Group Charge. The charge was provided and discussed, outlining the goals of commencement which will guide the work group deliverables. UO Commencement Goals: Formally recognize and celebrate the academic achievement of students who have successfully completed their studies and met the requirements for graduation; serves as a rite of passage for students as they prepare to move on to the next stage of their lives, be that further education, a career, or other pursuits; opportunity for families, friends, faculty, and staff to join in the celebration of these students’ accomplishments.

Commencement Overview and Fact Sheet. A fact sheet highlighting the history and planning consideration was presented for review and discussion. A more detailed resource analysis will be reviewed in a future meeting.

Next Steps and Timeline. A proposed project timeline was shared. The next step for the work group will be the creation and distribution of a survey to the primary stakeholder groups. A draft will be sent for feedback, with the goal to launch initial data collection in early April.
