Dear University of Oregon community,

As we close fall term and celebrate the winter holiday season, I am filled with appreciation for all that we have accomplished together in the last year.

Many cultures and religions around the world use light to celebrate during the dark winter months. Flickering candles, fireworks, twinkling bulbs, glowing lanterns, and roaring fireplaces bring loved ones together, illuminating and warming their holiday traditions.

As I think back on my first term as interim president, I am grateful for the light brought to our work and studies at the university, and for the bright energy of being together like we haven’t been in years.

It was a spectacular year of growth, transition, and beginnings. We launched new programs: the Ballmer Institute for Children’s Health, the Home Flight Scholars Program, and the School of Computer and Data Sciences, to name just a few. We welcomed a record class of first-year students, world-class new members of the faculty and staff, and for a few weeks this summer, the world’s best athletes and loyal fans for the World Athletics Championships Oregon22.

There were so many milestones, discoveries, achievements, and “aha” moments that played out across the University of Oregon. Individually and collectively, we continued forward on our path to gaining understanding, sharing knowledge, creating impact, and bringing light to our world. I am deeply proud of what we are accomplishing together.

None of this is easy. And none is taken for granted by me. Thank you for your energy and dedication to this noble mission. Here’s wishing you a bright holiday season and a happy new year!
