University of Oregon President Karl Scholz announced the appointment of Christopher P. Long as provost and senior vice president at the university. Long is a higher education leader with twenty years of experience building programs at the top public research universities of Michigan State University and Penn State. The selection follows a national search, and he will begin his term on June 17.

The University of Oregon is seeking a Provost and Senior Vice President (provost) to make a transformational mark on a growing, nimble campus poised for innovation and collaboration. As the university’s chief academic and operating officer, the provost works with the president and the president’s executive leadership team to execute on university priorities and provides leadership for setting priorities. This involves developing policies affecting all academic and service components of the university; promoting and sustaining the highest standards in teaching, research, and service; and advancing work to enhance our students’ experience and ensure their success.
The provost also oversees allocation of funds to all academic units and programs and approves faculty appointments, promotions, and tenure decisions. The provost reports directly to the president and serves as the university's chief executive officer in the absence of the president. The provost supervises the upper academic executive-level positions within the university including deans and vice provosts.
